Key Words Reading Scheme
What is the Key Words reading scheme?
The Key Words Reading Scheme (series 641) is both Ladybird’s bestselling and longest-running series. Commonly known as the Peter and Jane books, this iconic reading scheme was first published in 1964 and is still going strong today. The series, featuring siblings Peter and Jane and their dog, Pat, has helped generations of children around the world learn to read.
Head teacher and literacy specialist William Murray had presented a paper entitled ‘Key Words to Literacy’, about teaching children to read based on the systematic introduction of commonly occurring words. Using this research as a foundation, Douglas Keen enlisted Murray to author Ladybird’s Key Words Reading Scheme.
In 2015, the Key Words Reading Scheme reached the incredible milestone of over 100 million copies sold in its lifetime.
